Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about Referral Reef, the private, paid referral network for fractional executives and consultants.
About Referral Reef
What is Referral Reef? Referral Reef is a private, paid, vetted community of fractional executives and consultants who trade warm referrals, back each other's businesses, and get paid for it. It's a referral network, not a content community: the whole point is that work comes to you, and you send work to people you trust.
Who is it for? Fractional executives and consultants who build their business through relationships. The best fit is someone who has been in the game for a while, has a clear niche, and believes referrals beat cold outreach. Members include fractional leaders across areas like finance, HR, operations, sales, marketing and RevOps.
What problem does it solve? Fractional talent refers each other work constantly, but usually informally, for free, and with no system to track it. Referral Reef gives those referrals infrastructure: intros are tracked from intro to close, and commissions, contracts, invoicing and tax paperwork are handled in the platform, so nobody has to chase anybody. In short: referrals shouldn't run on goodwill and good memory.
How is this different from other communities or job boards? Most communities sell content and vibes. Referral Reef is built around revenue. It isn't a job board or a place to post "I'm available" into the void. Every member is vetted, every intro is warm, and referrals are tracked and paid through the platform. The calls, events and newsletter all exist to make more of those intros happen.
Who founded Referral Reef? Morgan Abreu, who also runs Melia Strategy, a fractional sales consultancy based in Honolulu. Morgan started Referral Reef in July 2026 after seeing the same pattern over and over: great fractional execs relying on word of mouth that dried up when a project ended, and founders who needed those people but had no idea where to find them without paying a recruiter.
Is it working? What kind of results have members seen? Yes. Within the first three months, one member hired another member, two CFOs set up a subcontract together when one was over capacity, and a member landed a client through an outside referral. Almost every opportunity posted to the referral board gets filled by members within the month, without anyone looking outside the network.
How it works
How does a referral flow through the Reef?
- A member posts an opportunity to the board: a client need, a project, or a role they can't fill themselves.
- Other members claim it if they're the right fit, or tag someone they trust who is.
- The connection happens through a warm, specific intro.
- Everybody gets paid. Contracts, invoicing and payment are handled in the platform.
What kinds of opportunities show up on the referral board? Three main kinds. Client referrals, where a company needs fractional help and a member who knows them makes the warm intro. Subcontracts, where a member is over capacity and hands work to someone in the network. Project builds, where a member needs a team (for example, a full-stack crew for a product build) and members raise their hands.
What is the Referral Reef Method? Three steps: get vetted and onboarded, meet the network, then refer, get paid, repeat.
What platform does Referral Reef run on? Referral Reef runs on Nolodex. Members log in at https://app.nolodex.com. The platform handles member profiles, the referral board, discussion boards, contracts, payouts, invoicing and tax documents.
What is the Referral Matchmaker on the website? It's a tool on the homepage where you describe the referral you're trying to give or get. It suggests Reef resources and the kinds of members worth meeting, plus a note you can send to the founder with your application.
Referral fees and getting paid
Do I get paid for referrals? Yes. When you send a referral and it closes, you're compensated. Payments, invoicing and tax documents are handled automatically through the platform, so you never have to chase anyone down.
How much is the referral fee? You set your own referral fee. 10% is the benchmark Referral Reef suggests, not a rule.
How do I track who I've referred and what I'm owed? Referrals are tracked in the platform from intro to close, along with the contracts, invoicing and payments tied to them, so you don't need your own spreadsheet.
How quickly does membership pay for itself? One paid referral typically covers a whole year of membership.
Membership and pricing
How much does membership cost?
- Monthly: $25/month
- Annual: $270/year (10% off the $300 you'd pay monthly). This is the best deal.
- There is also a $20 platform fee, billed annually, charged at registration.
Both monthly and annual memberships include access to the vetted referral network, commission on referrals you send, weekly networking sessions, payments, invoicing and tax documents through Nolodex, and member pricing locked in.
Is there a lifetime or founding member option? There was a $250 lifetime Founding Member option, but it is closed and no longer available.
What is the Sales Mentorship tier? It includes everything in membership, plus a monthly 1:1 pipeline review session with Morgan, priority access to retreats, and a dedicated community channel for async support. It's an annual plan at $3500/year. To learn more, book a call at https://calendar.app.google/r6vkR1sspW6wHDYG9.
Can I cancel? Yes, you can cancel anytime before your next billing cycle. If it doesn't pay for itself, cancel, no guilt trip.
Is there a free trial? Not that's listed. The best way to see it before you commit is a free weekly info session: https://luma.com/referralreef.
Joining and vetting
How do I join? Apply here: https://app.nolodex.com/request-invite?community=f95e227f-3dd9-445f-bb91-155ececa0653&group=217d3ab2-b41f-4c7f-a33c-23c32024e7a6. Every application gets a real look from Morgan.
Is everyone accepted? How does vetting work? No. Every member is reviewed before they join. The network is quality over quantity: no strangers, just fractional execs and consultants who've done the work and can back it up. There's a real conversation before anyone joins.
I was accepted but haven't finished joining. What do I do? Sign in here: https://app.nolodex.com/signin. If your login link has expired, email morgan@referralreef.com and Morgan will send a fresh one. Your spot doesn't expire.
Can I see how it works before applying? Yes. Morgan runs a live info session every week. It's 30 minutes with no slideshow theater: you see how the referral board works, who's in the network, and how referrals get tracked and paid, and you can ask anything. Sign up at https://luma.com/referralreef.
I'm not a fractional exec. Can I still use Referral Reef? Yes. If you're a company or founder looking for fractional talent, you can come to an info session to see who's in the network, or email morgan@referralreef.com with what you need and Morgan will point you to the right person.
Getting started as a new member
What should I do first after joining? Two things. First, complete your profile at https://app.nolodex.com with your photo, your superpower, and the kind of work you want referred. Members search by need, so a finished profile is what makes you findable. Second, sign up for the weekly New Member Onboarding call at https://luma.com/referralreef, then introduce yourself on the discussion boards with one line about who you are and one kind of referral you'd love.
What makes a good member profile? Your superpower in one plain-language sentence, the 2 to 3 types of work you want referred, and your rate structure or how you like intros made.
How do I get the most out of membership? Give first. The members getting the most referrals aren't the loudest, they're the ones who made intros in their first two weeks. Try to give one referral in your first week. A helpful exercise: finish the sentence "If you know someone who ______, send them my way" with one specific, picturable person.
Events and community
What events does Referral Reef run? Weekly calls including New Member Onboarding, speed dating happy hours, pipeline power hours, speaker sessions and coworking time, plus weekly info sessions for people curious about joining. Some members also host free workshops. The full calendar is at https://luma.com/referralreef.
When is the weekly onboarding call? It's usually on Fridays at 8:00 AM Hawaii time (HST), held virtually. Check https://luma.com/referralreef for the current schedule.
Are the events virtual? The weekly calls and info sessions are virtual.
Is there a retreat? Yes. A Hawaii retreat is planned for summer 2027. Members get first invitation when details are released, and engaged members are first on the list. Sales Mentorship members get priority access to retreats. Details like dates and cost haven't been announced yet.
Is there a newsletter? Yes, The Reef. It shares open opportunities moving through the network, member wins, events, and lessons from building a referral network in public. Members also get a weekly member update. Subscribe at https://referralreef.beehiiv.com or on Substack at https://referralreef.substack.com.
Is there a LinkedIn group or pod? Referral Reef has a LinkedIn pod where members support each other's posts by turning on post notifications for one another. Ask Morgan if you'd like to join.
Member perks
What perks come with membership? Beyond the referral network and weekly sessions:
- Member spotlights on the Referral Reef LinkedIn page, featuring who you are, what you're great at and what referrals you want. Active members can request one through the form shared in the welcome emails.
- Member referral rewards: refer a fellow fractional pro who joins, and your next month is free. Use "Suggest new member" in the platform.
- Group health insurance access (see below).
- First invitation to the 2027 Hawaii retreat.
Does Referral Reef offer health insurance? Yes, members get access to group health insurance through a partnership with a national insurance brokerage. It is real health insurance, not a health sharing ministry. Highlights: four plan types with multiple deductible options, access to the Aetna and PHCS provider networks, coverage in most states, options for solopreneurs, independent contractors and small businesses, enrollment in under 30 minutes, and personal guidance from licensed brokers. Members can find the link to explore options and register for info sessions in the member announcement email, or ask Morgan.
